Sally James
Artist & Printmaker

I am a landscape artist specialising in linocut printmaking from my home studio in Kingston, Southern Tasmania.

As a biological scientist, I am drawn to living forms and landscapes as subject matter. I perceive them as dynamic systems, made up of many connected parts, constantly interacting with each other.

Making art has always been part of my life. Growing up in the suburbs of Hobart, Tasmania, there was always the river, the mountain, and trees at the skyline.

I loved to draw and paint watercolours from an early age, and during my career as a scientist I found that making art helped me to clear my mind and keep a sense of perspective.

After completing my Ph.D. in Microbiology and working as a researcher and lecturer in Sweden and Australia, I left academia and moved back to Tasmania with my young family. All the while I continued to create art and attending short courses to expand my knowledge.

I discovered reduction linocut images online and instantly loved its distinctive look: the blend of crisp edges and colour gradients, and the highlighting of light and dark tones. I soon made linocut printmaking my primary artistic medium.

Each new artwork presents an enjoyable technical puzzle requiring me to plan how the overlapping layers will combine to create the final image.

I have since developed a style of landscape art that is realistic but slightly abstracted. My work has been well received – regularly winning awards in local and national competitions.

What do artists and scientists have in common? This is a question that Tasmanian artist Sally James asked herself when reflecting upon what drew her towards her first career as a biological scientist, and then towards her second, seemingly dissimilar, career in reduction linocut printmaking. It seemed to her that curiosity, a love of solving technical puzzles, and the drive to comprehend and engage with the natural world, were traits that both groups might share.

Born in Hobart in 1970, Sally is best known for her layered reduction linocut landscapes featuring reflections of light on moving water, misty skies, and sunlight-dappled foliage. Sally’s experience of growing up in Tasmania is threaded through with memories of family picnics, camping, and boating around the coast.

After graduating from the University of Tasmania in 1992, Sally completed a Ph.D. in Microbiology at the University of New South Wales in 1997.  She worked in Sweden as a post-doctoral researcher at Lund University for two years, returning to Sydney in 2000 as a lecturer in Environmental Microbiology at UNSW. In 2005 Sally left academia and moved back to Tasmania with her young family.

Sally always maintained a regular practice in art, building skills in watercolours, oil painting, pastels, and drawing. Attending printmaking classes in 2018, Sally was captivated by the clean lines and subtle colour gradients of this medium. She found that reduction printmaking involved many of the same thought processes intrinsic to scientific research, such as making sense of complexity through pattern-recognition and simplification. Sally works with oil-based inks to build up layers of transparent and semi-transparent colour to produce the effect of warm, glowing light. She also creates complex, layered monotypes, and often combines linocut and monoprinting techniques to achieve subtle textured effects and soft edges.

Sally has exhibited consistently, building an impressive tally of awards in local and national competitions.

Her first solo exhibition, ‘Water and Sky’ was held in August 2022 at the Rosny Farm Arts Centre and she has since had three solo exhibitions at the Colville gallery in May 2023, August 2024, and September 2026. Sally’s work has twice been selected for purchase through Arts Tasmania as public art for display, by the Hobart Repatriation Hospital and the Hobart police department, in 2022 and 2023 respectively.
