Lilydale Dawn was inspired by light shining down through breaks in the clouds on a misty early morning just outside the township of Lilydale in northern Tasmania.
This artwork was completed in 7 stages and printed by hand using Caligo Oil inks. The light effects that dominate the sky were applied to the lino using a small roller, and sharper light rays were produced by removing ink from the block with a soft rag. The rest of the technique was classic reduction printing, working from light to dark. I mix my colours from a restricted pallet to keep a strong connection between them, using transparent or diluted pigments where possible to allow the layers to influence, and interact with each other.
