Shaded undergrowth contrasts starkly with the mussel-encrusted sandstone that frames this open rock pool near Boronia Beach, southern Tasmania. It is a vibrant slice of natural beauty right in the midst of suburbia where local families come to swim in the fresh seawater.
The wavelets shimmer in the sunlight reflecting sky blue and rock yellow, combining with the shining green of water over sand and seaweed, forming complex and ever-moving patterns.
In this artwork I use reduction linocut printing to create transparent layers of greens, blues and yellows to depict the effect of translucent light shining up through the water column. The sharp edges typical of this medium are used to emphasize the contrast between bright surface-reflected sunlight, and richer, deeper tones of the water.
