Rainforest Floor

This artwork was inspired by the effect of light filtering through trees and back-lighting their leaves in temperate rainforest in North West Tasmania – not far from the tiny settlement of Corinna. The rainforest floor is typically covered with logs, fallen branches and leaves all in various stages of breaking down back into the soil, and covered with soft moss and ferns. The trees reach up, competing with each other for the sunlight allowing very little to reach the ground. I used a high tonal contrast between the shadowed and sunlit areas of the trees and ground to emphasise the dappled effect of the forest light.
